I had a conversation with a friend recently and I asked what his view about life was, his response was similar to what most people would say, “Life is a roller coaster, there will be ups and downs”. One way and probably the best way to understand other people is to have them tell you what they view life to be all about. There will be diverse answers and this is absolutely expected because there are different ways life should be viewed. No one can gainsay the fact that the way we view life will determine how we invest our time and resources in the course of it.
So, how do you view life? Your response is actually what you expect from it, which will influence your life, because it will determine your goals, relationships, values and priorities. For instance, if I view life as a game, winning at it will always be my focus. If I view life as “just have fun”, you would probably see me at parties and at fun- related activities often. Most importantly, how does God expect us to see life? He gave us this life and surely has an agenda for it. Basing your life on worldly wisdom isn’t His expectation, he gave the instruction in Romans 12:2,
“Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God-what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.”- Good News Translation.
Life on earth is God’s will and there are 3 views about this life on earth.
IT IS A TEST
You will agree with me that there are a lot of stories in the Bible where God tested individuals. He tested their character based on love, faith, obedience and loyalty. While there were some that passed the test, others failed. We are tested by God continually, through any means. Our relationships and the way we interact is being tested by God. He doesn’t need to tell us to sacrifice our only son to test us, our response to failures, success, illness, disappointment and people are ways He tests us. It could be unanswered prayers, of course He listens, but most times, he wants to test our faith. It could be undeserved criticism and delayed promises, there are so many ways he could test us and that is just one way to view life- a test. God wanted to test Hezekiah’s character and so he withdrew from him ( 2 Chronicles 32:31), this goes a long way in telling us that our reactions to everything that goes on with us matters a lot. And you know what? He is always immensely happy whenever we pass these tests and rewards us.
IT IS A TRUST
Imagine you want to embark on a long journey and then you entrust your properties to a fellow till your return. How would you expect such person to handle your properties? Properly, I suppose. That is what God expects from us too, this life he has given to us is for a while and he has provided for us so many resources and wealth to handle. He has entrusted us with ideas, talents, resources and opportunities, how do we handle all these? Some might think it’s through their hard work that things have come through for them, but the truth is God has made these things available and it is expected for us to actually work hard to receive them. This is why there are some things we ask of him and we just don’t get, he knows what is good for us and otherwise and therefore, the good things have been made available and we just need a little more effort. Psalm 24:1 affirms the authority of God over all things.
“The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord, the earth and all who live on it are his” – GNT
There is this… should I call it ‘spirit’ that dwells in most individuals, when that thing doesn’t belong to them, they don’t care how it is being handled, but as lovers of Christ, the fact that God owns it should be the more why it should be taken care of. At the end, there will be an evaluation and the results will determine the reward. Treat all you have as what God entrusted you with, and that’s the truth. One factor that easily makes people compromise is money, I guess it skips their minds that money is given by God too. The way we handle earthly riches determines how much spiritual riches he will bestow upon us.
IT IS TEMPORAL
I am certain this is no news, our life on earth is temporal and this is the more reason why we should treat each day like it’s our last. David recognized this in Psalm 119:19, he didn’t think he would spend a lot of years because of how much God loved him, it is certain we leave the earth when the appointed time comes. How do you live each day? God’s plan for us isn’t just on this earth, and that’s why in Jeremiah 29:11, he expects us to have an “expected end”- Heaven. We are Christ’s ambassadors on earth. Read 1 Corinthians 7:31. Earth is not our home, there is still much to come. When death comes, it is not one’s termination, but a transition into eternity which is determined by how we live on earth.
