What Jesus Tells Us About Worry.

Some days ago, I was bitterly worried about a money-related issue. It got to me so much that I had to rant to a close friend, saying some bad things I shouldn’t have and wondered why God allowed such situation. I can’t say I forgot God’s promises and ability to turn situations around, I just needed a quick one.

It’s no news as to how much we worry as humans. The extent differs though, while some worry for a moment and let it slide, hoping for a better situation, others worry to the extent of crying their eyes out. Which one describes you?

We all have moments that throw us in the worry state, letting us imagine the horrible outcome of situations. This thing called worry isn’t a bad thing after all, as a matter of fact, it’s known as a sign of intelligence by researchers. But how much do we worry compared to how much we think of possible solutions?

Getting to the point, Jesus understands our existence and the extent to which the issues of life can switch our mood to that of worry. Remember He came into the world and dwelt among humans, so He definitely understands our unpredictable and unstable world, the temptations we encounter daily and the ability to worry. He tells us not to worry in Matthew 6:25-27

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? verse 25

There is no gainsaying to the fact that God gave us life and our bodies without our requests. Human life is much more valuable than food, so is our bodies more important than the gorgeous attires we put on. If God can provide us with these precious gifts, do you think He wouldn’t provide the resources to get food and clothes? He definitely didn’t create us to suffer. He has provided us eternal life and is more than capable to provide for our temporal life.

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? verse 26

You should read this again and again. Have you? Can you see how precious and invaluable God sees you? If He can feed birds of the air, that have nothing in their store neither do they have any source of income, why do you think He isn’t there for you too? We were created in His image, remember? And we are the crown of His creation. We are of much value than the birds of the air and if He can provide for them, He can for us too!

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? verse 27

This is as scary as it’s the truth. What exactly do we gain from worry? While worrying, do you imagine how people die every day? You think they have no worries too? At least we are alive to worry. It brings nothing but fear and anxiety. Really, no one can add even a minute to his span of life. Worry doesn’t provide the things you invite it in for, it rather brings negative results.

Read: Why God hasn’t answered your prayers (yet)

Jesus has given an instruction not to worry. Do we intend to follow or neglect the instruction? Some may say they have nothing to eat or wear and conclude God doesn’t exist. How close are you to Him? He can’t leave His people to suffer. You just need to recognize Him as your God and submit to Him, seeing Him as the only source of your needs.
